Safe Ranger Project

The Problem Our Rangers Face
Members of many anti-poaching units throughout Africa were originally employed as Field Rangers whose duties entailed patrolling reserves; they were the eyes and ears of the Section Ranger. Their role was to collect biological information and serve as a deterrent to stop subsistence poachers.

Those same Field Rangers now find themselves in a high risk Anti-Poaching war. The duties have changed and the risks have increased, but the First Aid training has often stayed the same - a one or two day city-based First Aid course - barely enough to cover the basic treatment of minor injuries. The courses usually only covered some theory and a few simple classroom practical demonstrations.

A First Aid course is no different to a firearms course. Just as firearms theory needs to be backed up with ample time practicing on the range, so too does first aid theory need to be backed up by realistic simulations – after all – someone’s life may be at stake.

Our solution
Field Rangers and Anti-Poaching unit members have a real need for a First Aid course that is practical and involves simulated training in the field. The practical simulations provide the candidates with simulated field training in how to handle the different trauma and medical emergencies that may arise in their working environments. Simulations involve all of the aspects of safely handing a first aid situation – from scene management and treatment, to basic transportation, problem solving and hand over reports.

How we assist
